Ask present-simple questions with do and does

Use the present simple for habits and regular activities. Yes-no questions with many verbs need do or does. Questions with be follow a different pattern.

Match the helper to the subject

Use do with I, you, we and they; use does with he, she and it. “Do you like tea?” asks about a preference. “Does he work here?” asks about his regular work.

Use the base verb after does

The statement “She reads books” becomes “Does she read books?” in a question. Do not add another s to read when you already use does.

Keep be questions separate

“Are you ready?” is correct; “Do you are ready?” is not. Match the helper in short answers too: “Yes, I do” or “Yes, I am”, depending on the question.

Examples

  • Do you like tea?
  • Does she read books?
