Past simple first steps: went, saw and visited

Use the past simple to describe a finished event in the past. Time expressions such as yesterday and last week make the context clear. Practise regular and irregular verbs with short examples.

Separate regular and irregular verbs

Visit becomes visited in the past. Go does not become goed; its past form is went. Learn an irregular form in a short sentence such as “We went home”, not only as an isolated table entry.

Return to the base form after did

The statement “She saw the boat” becomes “Did she see the boat?” Its negative is “She did not see the boat”. Keep see in the base form when did carries the past tense.

Pay attention to small words too

In “A child waves from the shore”, from describes the shore as the source of the wave. “The child on the shore” locates the child there. Notice how prepositions affect meaning as well as checking the verb tense.

Examples

  • We visited a village.
  • He went home.
  • Did she see the boat?
