A1
He, she, it and the verb be
He, she and it are subject pronouns. Am, is and are are present forms of the verb be. Identify the subject first to help you choose the form that agrees with it.
Practise the pairs together
Use I am; he, she, it is; and you, we, they are. You can replace “my sister” with she: “My sister is here” and “She is here” can refer to the same person.
Choose a pronoun for the context
He and she can refer to people; it commonly refers to a thing. Use people’s preferred pronouns. They can also refer to one person. A translation in your language may not show these distinctions.
Notice negatives and questions
“She is not here” is negative. In “Is she here?”, is moves before the subject. Do not copy this pattern to “She likes tea”: its present-simple question is “Does she like tea?”
Examples
- I am ready.
- She is here.
- They are at home.
